Are Allergy Shots Right for My Child

Allergy shots are an excellent way to treat allergies and asthma. Deciding to give your child allergy shots may seem scary, but it does not have to be as daunting as it appears. Allergy shots can be wonderful for many allergy sufferers and have been around for over 100 years.

Before deciding on any medical treatment for your child, it's important to understand as much as you can about the procedure. Allergy shots consist of small concentrations of the allergen to which the patron is allergic to. With time, we will increase the concentration of the allergen to build tolerance. The method of gradually increasing the dosage ensures that the patient will not have a severe reaction. The amount of injections your child will receive depends on how many allergens they have. The typical dose is one to four injections per visit.

There will always be some risks involved with any medical treatment, but thankfully allergy shots are relatively safe. The most common reaction is swelling, redness, or warmth at the site of the injection. These symptoms are normal and indicate that your child's body is experiencing an immune response.

While not common, there are more serious reactions associated with allergy shots. Anaphylaxis or systemic reactions are known to occur in some after injections. We always have patients wait at least thirty minutes after the shots are administered to check for any adverse reactions.
